Second
Derivation

PROJECT & SUPPORT

Make scientific checks
reusable.

Second Derivation is working out a repeatable way to check published results, and to publish each review with its code so that others can rerun it.

WHY THIS PROJECT

Build on the work
of checking.

Independent verification takes time: reconstructing assumptions, rebuilding calculations and resolving disagreements. Making that work reusable gives each check value beyond a single paper.

The project grew out of Rodion Popkov’s own cosmology research, which involved re-checking calculations in other papers with AI models. Rodion is an independent developer and product manager in Berlin. There is no team or external reviewer yet; finding specialist reviewers is part of the pilot.

THE FIRST PILOT

Three goals.

A reviewed research case

One narrowly scoped calculation, checked by an external specialist and released with its evidence and limitations.

A reusable checking method

The workflow written down, and the first software tools taken from the case: only what the case actually needed.

A public repository

The review, its code and data instructions on GitHub, tagged as a release and archived with a citable DOI.

SUPPORT THE PILOT

Expertise, compute
and research time.

Budget and timeline are not fixed yet. Support would fund independent specialist review, research software development and computing time. Academic collaboration is also a valuable contribution.

Progress will be assessed through reproducibility, scientific usefulness, false findings and the human effort required. Public methods and released research materials are the intended outputs.

Sponsorship will be disclosed. Scientific conclusions must remain independent of the funder.
